Lent Course for Our Community 2022

This year we will not be having a formal Lent Course as in previous years. Instead, on Tuesday mornings from around 10.30am we will meet informally to chat and reflect around a theme or subject of our choice. This informal session will take place after the Holy Communion service which begins at 10am on Tuesdays, so why not come to both?

Location: St Mary’s Church, Shrewton
Time: 10.30am
Facilities: toilet, refreshments, heating

GROUPS AND EVENTS NOT AT SPB CHURCHES

Maddington Church Room

We are blessed to have a Church Hall within our parish. Maddington Church Room, also known as ‘The MCR’ or ‘The Scout Hut’ was part of the parish of Maddington, St Mary, and passed into our care when that church was closed. It has been home to the St Mary’s Shrewton Scout Group for around 30 years, and also hosts many other local events as well as church meetings, and private parties. In the summer months the mobile library parks in the MCR car park and locals can come and browse books as well as enjoying a ‘Library Tea’; light refreshment, the exchange of local produce and the chance to sit in the sun for a while and catch up with friends.

Christians Together

We enjoy working together with members of other church communities, especially our friends from Shrewton Methodist Church, and the Plain Church Community (and GUL) who are also based in Shrewton. Between us we work together to share projects and activities together, worshipping together when we can, and enjoying social events too. We have become a small ‘hub’ for the Trussell Trust which means we are able to refer people for food parcels in case of need in our villages.

Involvement in our Schools

We have two church schools in the parish, and an independent school, Appleford. Members of the church community spend time with the pupils and staff in each establishment, whether offering support in learning, reading with pupils, accompanying trips etc., or in governance, delivery of RE, and leading Collective worship. We also enjoy hosting each school in our churches when they are doing a project, or simply want to come and worship with us. Highlights in 2019 were spending time with Year 6 leavers from our Church schools, and hosting numerous Harvest Festivals! In 2020 and into 2021 we moved our support online, providing weekly recorded acts of Collective Worship, helping with pastoral matters, hosting RE lessons outside, and creating our first ever Do It Yourself At Home Christingle service! We love the fact that in spite of nearly two academic years out of the buildings, the children still greet us by name when they see us in the street…
