PAST EVENTS IN CHITTERNE
Flower Festival 2019
A wonderful event in our Chitterne calendar is the Flower Festival, this year themed ‘Books we have Loved’. Along with the magnificent displays in church, visitors were treated to lunch, or tea and cake in the neighbouring village hall. The weekend concluded with a special Songs of Praise service. We can’t wait to do it all again in a couple of years’ time!
Remembrance Service in Chitterne
With its situation in the heart of Salisbury Plain, it is inevitable that Chitterne would wish to mark the end of the Great War with a significant event. The Parish Council, Village Hall Committee and members of the Church community worked together to provide an event which was meaningful and poignant, as well as providing a legacy for future generations.
Along with a free lunch in the village hall, we were given an incredible display of memorabilia and plentiful tea and cake in the church. Villagers of all ages came to enjoy a trip down memory lane and share family stories with one another. But the most memorable and lasting part of the day came when we ceremonially planted a new tree in front of the village hall.
The new tree, an Oak, was placed to recall the Great War, and in memory of those from the community who had served, and those who had died. Surrounded by a wooden bench it is now a site for quiet reflection and relaxation at the heart of this village.
