Families, children and young people
Worshipping with the Family in Salisbury Plain Benefice
Across our four villages we have a service focussed around, and aimed at families with younger children almost every week of the month. Currently they take place as follows:
- 1st Sunday at Orcheston, 10am
- 3rd Sunday at Chitterne, 10am
- 4th Sunday at Tilshead, 9.45am
- and at Shrewton, 11am
All of these services last about half an hour, with only one reading and a talk aimed to include the children present. The songs tend to be more modern, and (in Shrewton) we often use the songs the children have learned at school. If you’d like to be kept ‘in the loop’ about what services are coming up from week to week, please contact us by email or on 01980 620580 and ask to be placed onto our ‘Families mailing list.’
Children’s resources during services
Because our villages are small and sometimes only one or two children are in church at any given service, we aren’t really able to provide Sunday school within the Benefice. However, each of the four churches has a special area dedicated to children. In these areas you will find books, pens, colouring sheets and activities, and toys. During any of the services you are welcome to sit with your child in the children’s area, or to collect things from the area and make use of them in the pews. We are currently exploring ways to develop these facilities, and especially to provide some things to appeal to older children. If you have any suggestions please do get in touch!
Messy Church (a shared church activity with our Churches Together friends)
Messy Church is a great opportunity to get together, chill out, play, worship and eat together. And it isn’t just for kids- it’s for everyone! The idea is that you come and enjoy the event with your children (or grandchildren), together learning about God, and one another. Messy Church takes place during the holidays only, so watch out for the ads around the villages and in book bags (if you go to one of the local primary schools).
Along with marking Christmas and Easter, recent themes have included The Armour of God, the Fruit of the Spirit, and Courage (in Chitterne in August). We have made things to wear, painted with our feet, decorated and eaten cupcakes & gingerbread men, made Easter gardens, and got creative with the glitter and playdough. Our summer Messy Church will involve lots of games and a picnic. Why not come along and give it a try?!
Coming in the near future
During 2014/15 we are hoping to develop a midweek meeting for carers and pre-school children at one of the churches in the Benefice. Based around a song, a story, a prayer and then some free play (with refreshments of course!), this will be an opportunity for the youngest in our community to become familiar with their church and faith, and for parents and grandparents to meet one another and relax for a while. If you would be interested in this group, please do let us know.
And did you know…
- …members of our church community are regular visitors to the primary schools
- and to Appleford School?
- We have a team in the benefice who do ‘Open the Book’ assemblies
- we have many governors
- as well as those who read with children
- help out at toddler groups
- and lead Guides
There’s so much more to share, so do look out for further details elsewhere on the website.
